I have two decades experience in journalism, and I’ve won awards for reporting, column writing and blogging. I’m available for general feature writing, personality profiles, commentary/essays, any reporting on the Catholic Church, developmental editing of opinion/lifestyle columns, limited ghost writing (including sermons for Catholic preachers), and public speaking events. I’m known for being able to get sources to talk to me when they won’t talk to anyone else, and am probably the only person who can say she’s interviewed both the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem and Shaquille O’Neal.
In my Second Act, after many newspapers closed down in 2009, I became a nationally recognized university academic advisor and then transitioned to my current position as an internship coordinator and career coach for journalism students. Writing a novel taught me to love the beauty and clarity provided by the Oxford comma, but I know when to dismiss it in favor of AP style.
My public speaking wheelhouse includes parenting, higher education, mental illness, and the intersection between faith and public life. My talks have been called informative and funny, especially if you’re drinking a margarita. Feel free to reach out to rshorton08(at)gmail(dot)com for any of your writing or public speaking needs.
